Yup, right on this day, February 4., Mark Zuckerberg launched Thefacebook, membership website for Harvard students. Eventually, the website/service was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, and finally to whole world.

Year later company dropped ‘The’ from its name, after purchasing the domain name facebook.com for 200,000USD. On September 26, 2006 Facebook was opened to everyone of ages 13 and older, and became service as we know it today.

After almost decade of existing in mobile phone industry Symbian platform went completely open source. Basically, all interested parties as of today can download it and change it’s code. Just in case you didn’t know what open source policy means.

Executive director of the Symbian Foundation, Lee Williams said ‘About a third of the Android code base is open and nothing more, and what is open is a collection of middleware. Everything else is closed or proprietary. On the contrary, Symbian will be made completely open source, providing the best possible experience for developers. To add to the open source announcement, the Symbian Foundation will announce its platform roadmap and upcoming features all the way to 2011, noting that anybody can influence the roadmap as well as help with new features.’

This supposed to be the largest transition from proprietary to open source code in history, as Wired pointed out…

As it appears Wired Italy nominated The Internet for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. It sounds pretty bizzare but this odd news appeared on Forbes so I’ll consider it true. Wired Italy wants to honor The Internet as a tool for promotion of ‘dialogue, debate and consensus trough communication’.

It stays pretty unclear who will accept the prize if The Internet wins so we’ll just have to wait until this fall.

Nokia has today announced that since the‭ ‬21‭ ‬January‭ ‬2010‭ ‬launch of the new version of Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation,‭ ‬there have been over‭ ‬1.4‭ ‬million downloads.‭ ‬The one million mark was reached just one week after the launch.

‭”‬We’re averaging a download a second,‭ ‬24‭ ‬hours a day,‭” ‬said Anssi Vanjoki,‭ ‬Executive Vice President,‭ ‬Nokia.‭ “‬When we announced free walk‭ & ‬drive navigation we knew it would be a game-changer.‭ ‬The number of people now using their Nokia for navigation,‭ ‬and as a result looking for more location-aware software,‭ ‬is growing faster than even we predicted.‭”

The success of the new version Ovi Maps is a key part of Nokia’s strategy to lead the market in mobile maps,‭ ‬navigation and location-based services. ‭ ‬By leveraging its investment in NAVTEQ,‭ ‬Nokia has been able to remove the costs associated with navigation for drivers and pedestrians and is quickly activating a massive user base to which it can offer new location features,‭ ‬content and services.‭

‭”‬This is great news for our‭ ‬3rd party application developers. ‭ ‬Within a matter of days there is an installed base of more than‭ ‬1‭ ‬million active users all potentially hungry for new and innovative location-aware apps,‭” ‬continued Anssi Vanjoki. ‭ “‬For the operators too there is a growing opportunity to sell more data-plans and a complete navigation package to existing and new customers.‭”

I don’t know if you really care what’s happening in my home country but I just must share my anger with you. As it appears unnamed croatian secret service made request to mobile operators to make pre-paid mobile user registration mandatory. And they want it now.

It happened. Just three months after it’s debut Windows 7 got 10% market share. Almost . According to figures released by Net Applications as of January 31. Windows 7 finds it’s way to 9,23 computers around the world.

In comparison to that figure around 20% of users are unfortunate to run Windows Vista, and Windows Xp counts almost 70% market share. If you look at this Net Applications table Windows 7 growth looks pretty steady…
